About the Sculpture
‘Te Ao Hurihuri’ – The Ever changing world
A Sculpture for Chengdu
‘Te Ao Hurihuri’ is designed to appear as if made using the iconic New Zealand farming material, No’8 steel wire. A material which has come to symbolise the ‘spirit of resourcefulness’, of solving problems using lateral thinking and creatively working with what we have – all characteristics of the ‘can-do’ ‘kiwi’ attitude.
The flowing lines sketch out a ‘Tiki’, a distinct icon of New Zealand and the wider Pacific. This work attempts to reflect the resilience, strength, dynamic energy and flare of Maori and also tells of ‘Maui’ the Polynesian hero and adventurer.
The more formal structures represent the concept of ‘Turangawaewae’ a persons ‘place to stand’ and are in contrast with the flowing lines of the sculpture which represents the spirit of a person.
The gap at the top refers to our individual and collective ongoing journey of learning and of ascension.
The wires run directly into the earth mother ‘Papatuanuku’.
This work can be considered a ‘Kaitiaki’ or guardian of the sky, the sea and the land.
